Gum disease is much more prevalent that you may think. As startling as it may sound, approximately one out of every two adults in America suffer from gum disease.

The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis. It is caused by a buildup of plaque below your gumline, which contains bacteria. You body reacts to that bacteria by having your immune system release substances that can inflame your gums and cause them to bleed. If left unchecked, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, loose teeth, lost teeth and damage to your jaws.

Often, people are not even aware that they have gingivitis, since it is frequently not painful at first. However, here are some signs of gingivitis that you should look for:

Your gums will be bright red or even tinted blue in places, as opposed to a pale pink color.
Your gums may be spongy, soft, or swollen.
Your gums bleed easily when you brush or floss.
Bad breath
Receding gums
The appearance of pus

You can fight gingivitis by brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, and that you floss at least once a day, making sure to floss below the gumline. Seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings will ensure that plaque and tartar are removed; and your dentist will be able to easily treat gum disease in its early stages.
